Why We Should Eat More Fruits and Vegetables
Wednesday, August 25th, 2010With healthcare spiraling out of control and the actual outcome of the recently passed public health care law in American, doesn’t it make sense for each person to take care of their bodies through good nutrition, regular exercise and steering clear of harmful toxins?
A recent study from Johns Hopkins University presented data from two nationwide surveys, which included roughly 24,000 participants. During a 24-hour period, only 11% reported consuming the recommended two or more fruits and three or more vegetables. If you want to optimize your health, five or more servings a day of vegetables and fruit would support your nutritional needs.
Following are erroneous beliefs about why we don’t eat enough of these important foods in our daily diet and why we should eat more fruits and vegetables.
Erroneous Belief #1: Eating fruits and vegetables is not convenient.
Eating healthy fruits and vegetables are just as convenient as picking up a cookie or a potato chip. What often happens is, we don’t have fruits and vegetables around and ready to pick up and eat, so we go for the easy, unhealthy alternative.
How to rise above this belief:
• Prepare your fruits and vegetables immediately after shopping. Cut up and wash veggies, wash fruit and keep both on your counter. Keep healthy juices in the front of your fridge so you see them first upon opening the door.
• Hang out in healthy places. Go to smoothie bars or healthy cafes so that you are tempted by healthy fruits and vegetables.
Erroneous Belief #2: I’ve never cared for vegetables and fruit.
Time to mature and start eating what’s healthy rather than habitual snack foods loaded with fat and empty calories. Get over it!
• Try different fruits and vegetables to stimulate your curiosity and taste buds.
• Mix fruits with yogurt and granola, spread almond button on celery, grill some veggies with olive oil and garlic and a little salt and pepper and wrap it in a veggie wrap.
• Toss different things into a salad with lunch and dinner. Try avocado, fruit, almonds and new vinaigrettes. Make a salad standard with these two meals.
• Blend several fruits together for fruit kabobs or fruit salad with a tasty honey yogurt dip and you have a perfect dessert that is light and healthy.
Erroneous Belief #3: I go to restaurants for most meals
Even those who eat in restaurants can order different fruit and vegetable choices. Many serve steamed, roasted and grilled vegetables as well as a variety of salads. You can also get fruit at most restaurants. Salads are a mainstay and you can ask for extra vegetables on top of the salad. Be creative – your wait staff will be happy to help you out.
Erroneous Belief #4: My produce spoils before I can prepare it
The easiest thing to do is prepare your fruits and vegetables within 2- 3 days of bringing them home. Then shop again. Human nature is to stuff the veggies or fruit away and then forget about it. Buy things for specific recipes you’ll be preparing in the next few days and then use them up. It’s fine to purchase frozen fruits and vegetables as well because their flash frozen at their peak freshness and still retain all the nutrition of fresh produce.
Erroneous Belief #5: Chips and candy are more convenient
A little preparation on your part can make fruits and vegetables as easy to grab as a candy bar or chips. Just clean, chop and store fresh produce in air tight containers and grab them to go. And by the way, thousands of dollars in hospital bills as well as being out of work for awhile with a heart attack or stroke is neither convenient nor worth any amount of slacking you do to avoid taking care of your health.
Erroneous Belief #6: Fresh fruit and veggies are expensive
Pound for pound, processed snacks cost over 5 time’s as much as fresh fruit and vegetables. Plus you are feeding your body with healthy nutrition which will save you doctor and hospital bills later on. Not a belief to hold you back from taking care of your self right now. Shop in season and shop around. You’ve learned why you should eat more fruits and vegetable and how to overcome any beliefs that may be holding you back. Now prepare for a fit and healthy lifestyle!
