$BlogItemUrl$>Thrush Natural Treatment
$BlogItemUrl$> |
Treatment for thrush must be chosen carefully; after all, this is a condition that often affects infants and we all know that babies are sensitive when it comes to taking medications. Women who have babies should take note of such natural remedies to avoid potential side effects on their children. Home cures for thrush can be easily prepared and are relatively safe since most of them are made from herbal and natural ingredients. If any member of the family is suffering from oral Candidiasis or thrush, here are some treatment options that can be easily made at home. Yogurt Eating a cup of unsweetened yogurt everyday will help prevent thrush from developing. This is not only good for curing thrush but is also effective in other types of Candidiasis, particularly vaginal yeast infection. Women with vaginal Candida infection can either eat it or use a tampon dipped in yogurt and insert it in the vagina. Ginger Ginger juice mixed with hot water can sooth tongue soreness and is also effective in getting rid of oral thrush. For infants, a mild solution should be made using warm water since ginger can be hot on the mouth. If the patient cannot take an almost-pure ginger drink, mix a thumb-size, crushed ginger with tea and make it an afternoon or evening refreshment. Calendula or marigold Crushed calendula mixed with tea can also cure thrush. A purer remedy can be made by using a dropper and dripping the solution on the tongue and areas of the mouth where the white curd-like substance - a common symptom of oral Candidiasis - is found. Baking soda A single teaspoon of baking soda diluted on water is also a highly recommended home cure for oral yeast infection. Soak a cotton ball in the solution and swab the tongue and the insides of the mouth to treat thrush. For women who breastfeed, the remedy should also be used to swab the breasts, particularly the nipples and the areas around the areola to make sure that the infection will not be transmitted to the baby. Vinegar For adults suffering from thrush or yeast infection in other parts of the body, dabbing a vinegar-soaked cotton ball on the affected areas will greatly help alleviate the burning sensation and itchiness. If it will be used on a baby, mixed it with a small amount of water to lessen the sour taste and to make it easier for the baby to take it. Home treatment for thrush is relatively safe and most options are highly effective. If you don't like taking chances with over the counter remedies, particularly for your baby, using a natural cure is a good alternative. |

$BlogItemUrl$>Breast Feeding And Diabetes
$BlogItemUrl$> |
"Breast milk is still best for under two years," the pediatrician says. And a mother must believe it because not only is it advisable for her child's health, it also lessens the chance of her getting diabetes.
female who have less chances of suffering from diabetes. A study conducted by the World Health Organization shows that more than 1.5 million babies die because they are not breast-fed. These are babies from third world countries. Their mothers' health are also in jeopardy that they don't have enough nutrition or milk in their bodies to save neither themselves nor their babies.
These social workers who educate mothers often go to the developing countries such as Nigeria and teach them the proper way to care for themselves and their infants. Good parenting at a young age would also result to the proper mental development of their infant.
That's why people must be educated when it comes to how important breastfeeding is for the infant and the mother. Not only is this beneficial for the baby's health, it will also have a better effect on the emotional aspect of the mother-child relationship. Breastfeeding is an early form of mother-child bonding that could occur at this young stage of the baby's life.
Some mothers prefer pumping their milk to a equipment as it hurts them when the child bites into their nipples. That must not be the case. It takes some getting use to. Breastfeeding will give the child the nurture, the love and the care that she deserves to have. Activists on the situation are recommending a movement to a decree that announces neglect on mothers who stop breastfeeding their children who are less than two years old.
There are some mothers who rush on to their daily activities that they prefer the bottle-feeding than breast-feeding. This often applies to a high-powered career woman. As much as possible, she should also fit into her schedule the time for her boy.
Some mothers consider that the good thing about bottled milk is that it has water and breast milk has less. However, breast milk also has water. The water contained in breast milk is in fact healthier for the infant than water that us adults drink. Notice also that babies accommodate better after they are breast-fed than after they are bottle-fed.
Breast milk prevents diarrhea. Diarrhea is a illness that often attacks babies. Developing countries lose a lot of their newly-borns to this sickness.
Breast milk also helps the child grow properly making him less prone to diseases. The child will also be more exceptional because his being breast-fed allowed his brain to develop better.
As for the women, there is a link to diabetes and breast-feedings. Women who engage in breast-feeding their infant will not have diabetes. While they're feeding their babies, they are lactating. Therefore, the hormones they release in this process protects her against aneamia and cancer.
In short, breast-feed your infant. Not only will you and your child be good in health, you will also have bonding time together. It helps to start training your child now at a young age because there's a lot of room for improvement and growth. Also, the mother has something to benefit from this evolution. She wouldn't have diabetes.
If scheduling is the problem, it's all about time management. When your child is about to go to school and off to an Ivy League school, you know your hard work paid off. |

$BlogItemUrl$>Cayenne Pepper for Flavor and Weight Loss
$BlogItemUrl$> |
Cayenne, a spice derived from Chili peppers has been used for centuries to give dishes an added kick. Named for the city of Cayenne of in French Guiana, the pepper is a relative of bell peppers and jalapenos and has been used to treat digestive problems and a host of other ailments as well. Today, the diet industry has grabbed a hold of this years old kitchen spice and discovered that Cayenne is also able to trigger satiety when you eat it.
Cayenne is made of capsaicin (the chemical that makes it hot and also the active ingredient in pepper spray), Vitamin A, and numerous antioxidants, but it is the capsaicin that is responsible for this pepper’s positive results in numerous studies on mice. Human studies on its digestive properties show Capsaicin works as an appetite suppressant when digested, and stimulates warmth inside the abdomen and giving it a “full” feeling. Many participants reported feeling fuller when eating food containing Cayenne. Other studies also show a more curious side effect of Cayenne — its ability to stimulate metabolic production.
Again, here are some of the bonuses of using Cayenne for weight loss: first, it is inexpensive and natural, commonly found in grocery stores as a way to add flavor to food so anyone can use it! It has studies to back it up and it has been shown to improve circulation and blood flow, and treat chronic pain and sore throats—very cool. Cayenne has no serious side effects compared to typical weight loss ingredients. Do note that Cayenne is not recommended for people with digestive problems or those who are at risk for ulcers and you’ll need other supplements if seeking fat burning effects or drastic help achieving weight loss goals. Of course, eating lots of Cayenne does not mean you don’t have to exercise so be sure to commit to a consistent exercise regimen and adhere to a well balanced and healthy diet for the best effects.

$BlogItemUrl$>Hippotherapy in South Florida
$BlogItemUrl$> |
| Have you or someone you know suffered a stroke or a traumatic brain injury? Perhaps you have a child with cerebral palsy or autism. If that person is a close relative or loved one, you know how debilitating such an event can be. It can not only rob the person of their independence but their self-confidence. As that person struggles to return to some semblance of their previous life, they are constantly confronted by people who tell them, "you can`t do this anymore. It is too dangerous." Thankfully, help is here. It is called hippotherapy and there is a hippotherapy facility right here in south Florida that does it. The company is called, Dimensions: Achievements in Therapy. It is actually made up of two facilities, a state of the art clinic located in Aventura, which houses, among other things, a sensory gym and both a stationary and a dynamic rock climbing wall. Dimensions second facility for hippotherapy is a horse farm, located in Southwest Ranches. It was this hippotherapy facility that I stumbled upon. It consists of about 2.5 acres, with a stable that houses four hippotherapy horses and a hippotherapy pony, two arenas and a track, plus a sensory course for children or adults with sensory disorders. The hippotherapy staff there is terrific. I met Maurice, who maintains and prepares the hippotherapy horses and one of the hippotherapy occupational therapists (OT). In all, there are five occupational therapists, five speech therapists and two physical therapists at this hippotherapy center. The hippotherapy staff, as a whole, appear friendly, caring and conscientious. The same can be said of the hippotherapy physical therapist, Jane Burrows. Jane Burrows is well qualified in hippotherapy in that she has over 25 years of experience as a physical therapist. "Hippotherapy from a physical therapy perspective," Jane notes, "is nothing more than using the three-dimensional movement of the horse to promote three-dimensional movement in the hippotherapy client." In other words, by placing a person with extra-sensory and balance deficits on a hippotherapy horse, that person over time is able to map the hippotherapy horse`s gait, the way the hippotherapy horse shifts his body, and how the hippotherapy horse moves his hips from side to side, with the eventual goal of reestablishing normalcy to the hippotherapy client`s movement. Jane commented that hippotherapy is appropriate for both adults and children, but that hippotherapy for children is more common. Of the total number of clients that the hippotherapy facility treats, 90% are children and only about 10% are adults. My first hippotherapy session was on Friday, February 29, 2008. Jane put me on the hippotherapy horse, Chocolate Chip. (For a continued discussion on what goes into the decision as to which hippotherapy horse to use for a particular hippotherapy client, please see subsequent articles in this series.) Jane placed me on Chocolate Chip, because she has a broader girth, enabling a hippotherapy client to maintain balance easier. She said that as my balance improved, she would transfer me to other horses. |

$BlogItemUrl$>Hippotherapy in South Florida - 2nd article in series
$BlogItemUrl$> |
isit to Dimensions Achievements in Therapy`s location for hippotherapy in South Florida, Southwest Ranches, I was mounted on a female hippotherapy horse, Flash, named after the movie Flashdance. Unlike Chocolate Chip, the horse I rode on for my first hippotherapy session, Flash is thinner and has a narrower midsection. According to my hippotherapy therapist, Jane, Flash is also more smooth-gaited, making the transition between surfaces on the hippotherapy course easier to navigate.
One new to hippotherapy might believe that riding a horse, with a narrower midsection, would make it easier for a person with balance issues to maintain their balance. In fact, it is harder for a hippotherapy client to maintain balance on Flash. The hippotherapy physical therapist, took me through some hippotherapy exercises, which focused on strengthening lateral muscles needed for balance.
First, as part of my hippotherapy, a series of pylons were placed in the path of the hippotherapy horse. As I went around each one on the hippotherapy course, I raised my right hand and twisted the upper section of my body and turned my head and pointed to an object on the right side of the hippotherapy course. I then crossed my arm over the front of my body and pointed left to the top of the hippotherapy pylon. This hippotherapy exercise was repeated using my left hand and turning to the left and then crossing my left arm over my body to the right. Clearly, this series of hippotherapy exercises stimulated muscle activity as my sides were sore the day after my hippotherapy session.
The second time around the hippatherapy pylons, my hippotherapy physical therapist had me reaching in front of me, with my arm just slightly off to the side and touching the top of the hippatherapy pylon. This hippotherapy exercise was much harder. One new to hippotherapy would be surprised to learn the intensiveness of such hippotherapy exercises as they are seemingly simple maneuvers.
In technical hippotherapy terms, the goal for this hippotherapy session was to exercise the corpus callosum, the structure within the brain that provides communication between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. The hippotherapy exercise of having my left hand reaching across my body`s midline to the right sends motor and sensory information to the brain, and then from the brain to the muscles.
Based on pictures taken during my hippotherapy session, my hippotherapy physical therapist has determined that my left leg almost acts independent of the rest of my body. Though disturbing to say the least, future hippotherapy sessions will likely integrate my left leg back into my bodily movements. So, I guess you might say that hippotherapy has taught me that I have been having an out of body experience for the past seventeen years; well, at least it would appear that my left leg has been having that experience without the intervention of hippotherapy. |

$BlogItemUrl$>Hippotherapy in South Florida - 3rd article in series
$BlogItemUrl$> |
This is the third article in my series on hippotherapy in South Florida. On my third visit to Dimensions: Achievements in Therapy`s location for hippotherapy in South Florida, Southwest Ranches, I was again mounted on a hippotherapy horse, named Flash.
My hippotherapy physical therapist`s goal for this session was to work on improving my balance and proprioception - a person`s awareness of where their body is in space. Working on balance involves, among other things, strengthening the muscles in the pelvic region. According to the hippotherapy physical therapist, it is very common for someone, who has sustained a traumatic brain injury, to experience decreased strength in their pelvic region. Like others with similar injuries, my pelvis is tilted forward. By strengthening my pelvic muscles, and maintaining a more neutral pelvic position to aid in sitting more upright, improved balance is facilitated.
The hippotherapy horse guide and hippotherapy therapist led Flash through a series of figure eights around a hippotherapy course, which has what look like field goal posts laying across the course at angles. The purpose of this hippotherapy exercise is to utilize the horse`s motion of stepping over the goal post type structures to address three dimensional balance.
To achieve improved three dimensional balance, the hipppotherapy horse is guided through a series of both large and small figure 8`s. The smaller or tighter figure eight allows the hippotherapy client to sense the hippotherapy horse`s muscle contractions as they are much greater in tight figure eights. This is exactly what the muscles of a human must do for the human to turn when they walk.
While circling the hippotherapy course in tight figure eights, my hippotherapy therapist instructed me to lift my opposite hand from the side to which I was turning and then look in that direction, twisting my torso from the waist up. This exercise is designed to further increase the informational crossover between the right and left side of the brain across the corpus callosum. (For discussion of the role of the corpus callosum, see the second article in this series at http://www.tbisurvival.com/)
To improve a brain injury victim`s ability to process information while still addressing three dimensional balance, a hippotherapy client is directed to sit backwards on the hippotherapy horse. Riding backwards forces you to reorganize incoming sensory information. Luckily, although timid at first, I adapted quite quickly to the situation and needed minimal assistance. |

$BlogItemUrl$>10 Critical Items Everyone Must Be Aware of Before Selecting A Cataract Surgeon
$BlogItemUrl$> |
A number of people regard their sight to be their most significant sense. Yet, every week thousands of people have cataract surgery on their eyes without having done any research on their eye surgeon. Who does your cataract surgery is one of the most critical decisions you will make in life.
It does not take a large investment of time to choose your eye surgeon if you know how. The following listing of Ten Vital Things Anyone Has to Know Before Selecting Your Cataract Surgeon will instruct you how. With this article you can decide on an excellent eye surgeon in less time than many people commit to choosing their next automobile.
1. Do not confine your selections to exclusively those cataract surgeons in your insurance network. Despite what your insurance company"s marketing materials may intimate, the fundamental factor in regulating who is "in-network" is who is inclined to sign that insurance contract. Currently there is no formalized method of rating cataract surgeons and any insurance company that indicates their network of cataract surgeons is the most qualified is disingenuous at best.
2. Ask those you trust Good sources of information include your primary care doctor, optometrist, and friends who have had cataract surgery. Even better references include the operating room nurses and employees at your local surgery center. They are often in the OR with the cataract surgeon and know which eye surgeon is the most skilled. Nurses are frequently very helpful individuals and will often be inclined to answer your question. The challenge will be getting beyond the hospital"s automated telephone maze and gaining access to a live OR nurse.
3. Research your cataract surgeon"s education Where did your eye surgeon get his education? You may not know which training programs are the most respected, but it is easy enough to ascertain their rankings once you know where your eye surgeon trained. Two objective reference sources are U.S. News & World Report"s Annual rating of Medical Schoolsand Eye Hospitals
Don"t get too hung up on the ranking order - if your cataract surgeon trained at a top 20 program he or she acquired outstanding education.
4. Research your eye surgeon"s State Licensure Your surgeon must be licensed to practice medicine in his state. In addition to confirming licensure, many state license web sites will also alert you to any history of disciplinary or legal action against your eye surgeon. In California you can look up this information online at http://www.medbd.ca.gov/lookup.html
5. Confirm that your Doctor is Board Certified Board certification is a type of "seal of approval" for all physicians. In order to obtain certification an ophthalmologist must successfully pass both a written and oral exam. In addition, younger eye surgeons must recertify every decade - a process that can take up to three years to complete. You can confirm that your ophthalmologist is board certified by checking the internet site: http://www.abop.org or http://www.abms.org
6. Look up your surgeon"s Practice Internet Site Assuming the preceding background check is favourable you can sometimes obtain useful information from your cataract surgeon"s web site. Although numerous sites do offer educational materials, keep in mind that its primary role is to market the practice. You won"t encounter anything unfavorable about your cataract surgeon there, but it can substantiate the positive information you have already obtained and afford you some insight into the eye surgeon"s background and practice philosophy.
7. Verify what others have experienced. Are recommendations available online (physician rating internet sites or practice site)? Are testimonials available in your eye surgeon"s reception area for your viewing? Will your eye doctor provide you the phone number of someone who had eye surgery that you can talk to?
Keep in mind that National privacy laws limit the quantity of information your ophthalmologist may be able to provide you regarding other patients who have had cataract surgery. All The Same, it shouldn"t be too burdensome for your physician to come up with a living person who would be willing to discuss the cataract surgery experience with you.
8. Learn how many surgeries your catarct surgeon has performed. There is a reason they call it the "practice of medicine." Just like a sports professional, an eye surgeon"s abilities improve with practice and experience. Every surgery differs in its "threshold" number (the number of surgeries necessary for the ordinary surgeon to become proficient). For cataract surgery I think this number is probably around 500.
If you are uneasy inquiring straightaway then take somebody with you to the appointment to ask for you. This is a critical question. These are your eyes. You only have two. Get over your reluctance. Just ask.
9. Meet the Eye Doctor. The above research can give you an idea if your eye surgeon is qualified to perform your surgery. Nevertheless, you cannot know if this is the individual you want working on your eyes until you see with him or her. In addition to verifying his or her certifications, you need to be comfortable with this person.
Trust is a serious consideration that cannot be sufficiently formulated without meeting your doctor in the flesh.
10. In The End, get a second impression. Most people wouldn"t buy a car without test driving it and at least one other auto. Why would you restrict your choice of eye surgeon because "he is on my insurance plan" before getting a sense of how comfortable you are with the selection your insurance has made for you? This is a very serious decision.
Unless you are wholly at ease with your cataract surgeon, get a second impression.
The best eye doctors do not mind that you have or are going to get a second opinion. In fact, one quick test of your doctor"s comfort with her own ability is to let him know that you would prefer a second opinion. If the ophthalmologist becomes defensive about this then you know the second opinion was a superb idea, after all.
In summary, there are many things you can easily do to affirm that you have made a good decision about who will perform your cataract surgery. Looking At the importance of your eyes, you owe it to yourself to complete this research before having cataract surgery.
