Develop Your Own Acid Reflux Diet
In a majority of cases, heartburn is actually caused by having a weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES is simply a set of muscle tissue located at the junction of the stomach and the esophagus. Under normal circumstances, this valve-like tissue forms an extremely tight seal, properly regulating what goes in and out of the stomach. If the LES relaxes inappropriately, or does not form a tight enough seal, acid from the stomach can escape into the esophagus, potentially leading to damage to the sensitive lining of the esophagus.

Certain foods, and beverages, have been shown to relax the lower esophageal sphincter at the wrong time. A few common offenders include alcohol, coffee, carbonated beverages, chocolate and fatty foods. Simply removing these items from your acid reflux diet should help alleviate some of your heartburn symptoms.

In addition to avoiding certain trigger foods, you should immediately stop smoking. Not only does the smoke weaken the LES, it also damages the lining of the esophagus, making the acid reflux you do experience that much more dangerous. If you suffer from heartburn, you need to stop smoking. PERIOD!

Perhaps that most effective aspect of following an acid reflux diet is the frequency that you should be eating your meals. We all have a tendency to eat three large meals every day. Eating smaller meals can actually help reduce your acid reflux symptoms by helping to prevent you from overeating and by reducing the amount of pressure put on the LES.

As you overeat, pressure builds on the LES to the point of causing inappropriate opening.

What is Heart Disease?

The heart is the center of the cardiovascular system. It pumps blood to all the cells of the body through the blood vessels. The blood pumped by the heart carries oxygen needed by the cells to function properly. Cardiovascular or heart disease is a group of heart problems that develop when both the heart and blood vessels are not functioning properly. Here are some problems that go along with heart disease:

1. Atherosclerosis - People with this type of heart disease have a build up of fat and cholesterol that narrows down the arteries making it difficult for blood to flow through.

2. Arteriosclerosis - Also known as the hardening of the arteries, this condition means that the arteries become thick and are no longer as flexible as needed to work the way they should.

3. Angina - People suffering from angina feel pain in their chest. This refers to the condition of the heart not getting enough blood.

4. Heart Attack - This condition occurs when blockage and blood clot cuts the blood flow to a certain part of the heart.

5. Stroke - This is the condition when a certain part of the brain is not getting enough blood due to a burst blood vessel or clot.

How Do You Develop Heart Disease?

Heart disease is not contagious. It is not like a cold or flu that you can just catch anywhere. However, there are certain factors that increase a person's risk of developing heart diseases. These are called risk factors.

Some of the risk factors are those that people can't avoid. These include aging and having some members in the family with a history of heart attack. However, there are also some other risk factors that people have control over. These are having hypertension or high blood pressure, smoking, not getting enough exercise, and being overweight.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Heart Disease?

Many people are not aware they have heart disease until they experience chest pain, stroke, or heart attack. These conditions are emergency case and often require immediate attention. However, if it is not classified as an emergency case and a doctor or physician suspects the patient could have heart disease. The doctor can do some tests to know more about if the patient's heart and blood vessels are functioning the way they should.

Heart disease tests include:

• Electrocardiogram - This test analyzes the electrical activity of the heart. A doctor uses a monitor to see and determine if the patient's heart beat is normal.

• Echocardiogram - The test makes use of sound waves to check the heart problems. These sound waves bounce off certain parts of the heart, displaying an image of the patient's heart on the monitor.

• Stress Test - For this test, the doctor asks the patient to do certain exercises while he checks through the electrocardiogram machine how the heart muscles react.

• Catheterization - For this test, the doctor inserts a long and thin tube into the patient's body to inject a special kind of medical dye. This dye can then locate narrow areas in the arteries caused by plague buildup.

• Carotid Artery Scan - This test also makes use of sound waves to check blockages and blood clot in the carotid artery. The carotid artery is a large blood vessel located in the neck. It is responsible for the supply of blood to the brain.

Obesity May Harm Your Health in Many Ways

Obesity, the condition where there is a considerable increase in the body mass index, is now proving to be really deadly. Obesity is in fact, one of those preventable problems which are claiming lives in great numbers all over the world. Since excessive body weight is associated with many problems in almost all parts and systems of the body, an aggravated condition of obesity can make it even deadlier for the obese.

Obesity affects various systems in the human body when in an aggravated condition. Adverse effects of obesity can be seen in humans. The following are:

Cardiovascular Problems:

Since there is a direct link between the accumulation of fat in the body and the blood and heart systems, various problems can be created. High blood pressure is one of commonest problems, usually caused by obesity. High cholesterol and atherosclerosis (blockage of the arteries) are some other commonly seen problems in obese people. Also, due to inflammation of arteries, the blood supply to the heart may also be reduced thereby creating a greater risk of heart failure. In fact, more than 12% of congestive heart failure cases are caused due to obesity.

Endocrine and Reproductive Problems:
The presence of extra fat in the body also hampers the production of many hormones. This happens due to presence of cells which impair the production of some hormones. Since the abdominal fat present in the patient impairs the production of insulin digesting cells, it is said to cause Diabetes mellitus type 2. Also, other problems like polycystic ovarian syndrome, menstrual disorders, infertility, etc. are known to occur in the reproductive system. Even in pregnancy, complications may occur which may also lead to birth defects in the baby.

Cancer:
Medical researchers have not been able to pinpoint the exact cause of this finding but it has already been established that being obese increases the risk of cancer to a great extent, especially in women. Chances of developing colon cancer, including other types of cancers like breast cancer, oesophageal cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, gall bladder cancer, etc are also found to be common in obese women. In addition, one can develop stomach, prostate gland, endometrial, ovarian or cancer of the cervix. Obese people need to take special care of their kidneys.

Neurological Problems:
Neurological problems are not a direct effect of increased body fat. Since obesity can cause problems like hypertension and diabetes which reduce the blood flow to the heart and the brain, there are various problems that may occur. Strokes may also occur due to lower blood flow to the brain, potentially causing impairment. Due to improper functioning of the brain, other problems like dementia, headache, meralgia paresthetica (pain in outer thigh due to injury to nerve), carpal tunnel syndrome and idiopathic intracranial hypertension can also crop up.

Musculoskeletal Problems:
Obesity can also cause a great stress on the human skeletal system. Since the bones and the skeletal frame have to bear far more body weight, it can be stressed out which causes problems like osteoarthritis. Lower back pain is also caused as an indirect effect of obesity, osteoarthritis and diabetes. Gout may also develop due to accumulation of uric acid in the joints, usually the big toe of the foot. This condition causes a great, unbearable pain.

Respiratory Problems:
Obesity causes the tissues to become soft and the muscle tone to become reduced around the airways, problems can arise in the respiratory system too, the commonest being obstructive sleep apnea. In addition, obesity hypoventilation syndrome is an extended form since the amount of oxygen reaching the lungs decreases. Asthma, another ailment can also occur because of obesity.

Gastrointestinal Problems:
Obesity causes problems like gastro-oesophageal reflux disease in which there is heartburn due to a reflux that is caused by mucosal damage in the oesophagus. Fatty inflammation of the liver is also an outcome. In addition, formation of stones in the gall bladder and hernia can also occur in obese people.

Genitourinary Problems:
Due to obesity, the development and the functioning of the genital organs can be affected to a great extent. Urinary incontinence, chronic renal failure with slow loss of kidney function, hypogonadism (improper functioning of sexual organs in males and females) and erectile dysfunction or impotence, can be caused as a result of obesity.

Psychological Problems:
Obesity causes a lot of psychological problems in patients as they have to face a lot of social stigma due to their appearance. This can lead to depression and low self esteem. Body dysmorphic disorder or too much botheration about body parts also causes a lot of stress and social isolation. In some adverse cases of psychological pressures, people may even commit suicide.

Skin Problems:
Though not really fatal, obesity also causes various skin problems in the patients like stretch marks, Acanthosis (hyper-pigmentation of the skin in folds), Lymphedema or fluid retention in various body parts, including Cellulitis, carbuncle or intertrigo.

All these problems are a direct or indirect consequence of obesity. There are so many problems that can be caused some of which are reversible and some irreversible. Obesity, like any other disease must be handled with care and caution!

Many people claim that they continue to smoke because it helps them to reduce and manage their stress levels and relax. Smokers are under the illusion that smoking relieves stress. Why Smoking Seems To Be Relaxing

While smoking, you are also likely doing some deep breathing as you inhale the smoke, and that deep breathing causes a relaxation response in your body. Of course, you can get the same effect by inhaling fresh oxygen rather than cigarette smoke.

The nicotine contained in cigarettes also has the added effect of triggering chemicals in your brain that artificially make you happy for the brief duration while you are smoking.

Why Smoking Causes Stress

If you still believe that cigarettes help with stress management, ask yourself this. Do nicotine cravings reduce stress? Does having shaky hands mean you're managing your stress well? While all of these symptoms may temporarily go away when you smoke another cigarette, the only reason you're getting them in the first place is because you're smoking.

Becoming reliant on nicotine for stress management is not only costly, but has so many other negative effects on your body it isn't even remotely funny. Smoking stress relief is a popular belief, but now that you know that it's wrong to think that smoking relieves stress, there's one less reason for you to continue smoking.
